What causes the lubricant to become turbid?
Normal lubricants should be bright and transparent. If the transparency of lubricating oil has changed, it indicates that some changes have taken place in the lubricating oil itself. We should find out the reasons and deal with them in time. What causes the lubricant to become turbid?
1. There is water in the lubricating oil.
If less water is mixed in, the oil becomes cloudy and looks gray, a little like the grey-yellow color of toffee. If more water is injected, the lubricant will turn into milk-like whitening emulsion. In this case, the source of water should be found immediately.
2. Incomplete dissolution of additives
Generally, there are additives in lubricating oil. In some cases, additives will precipitate, which is a normal phenomenon. For example, at low temperatures, some oils may have this problem. But the turbidity caused by this situation should only be a little turbidity, sometimes a small amount of precipitation, is the precipitated additive.
3. Decomposition of additives
In normal use, the additives of lubricating oil will also decompose to produce some white flocculent substances. Since it is due to normal use, this change in lubricating oil should occur gradually with the use.
4. Salt in lubricating oil
Not necessarily salt, but salt, of course. When salt is mixed into lubricating oil, minerals will not evaporate and remain in the oil, resulting in the lubricating oil color becoming muddy and dark, glossiness deteriorating, and the greater the concentration of salt is, the greater the influence on the transparency appearance of lubricating oil and the turbidity of lubricating oil.
5. Turbidity of Lubricating Oil at Low Temperature
At low temperatures, the lubricating oil may become turbid and precipitate white matter. These white substances are paraffin, floating on the upper surface of the lubricant, or mixed in the oil, which affects the transparency of the oil and makes the lubricant look turbid.
6. Lubricating oil mixed with other substances
Sometimes, the lubricant whitening, turbidity, or other color changes may also be mixed with other substances, such as other oils, antifreeze/coolant, grease, etc., to make the lubricant turbid.
